Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) Prescription in Tokyo

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, the injectable widely known as a “weight-loss shot” or “skinny jab”. It acts on the GLP-1 receptor and, in addition, on the GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) receptor — the world’s first dual incretin receptor agonist.

  • One injection a week: easy to fit into your routine, so it is simpler to keep going long term.
  • Pre-filled pen: simple to operate — anyone can give the injection themselves.
  • Very little pain: the needle is extremely fine, and most people barely feel it.
  • Appetite control: helps you feel less hungry, so eating less comes naturally.
  • Metabolic support: helps your body burn fat more efficiently.
  • When you may notice a change: results vary from person to person. Many people begin to notice a difference after about one to two weeks, and the change in weight tends to become clearer after a month or more. Using it steadily, without gaps, is recommended.

Who is Mounjaro for?

Mounjaro may suit you if you are:

  • Stuck at a plateau: diet and exercise alone are no longer moving the number on the scale.
  • Finding it hard to keep going: you have tried to lose weight several times but always gave up part-way.
  • Flagged at a health check: you have been told your weight is above the healthy range.
  • Concerned about the health risks of excess weight: such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes.
  • Not willing to go hungry: you would rather not put yourself through the stress of an extreme diet.
  • Looking for a medically supervised approach: you want a method with medical evidence behind it, guided by a doctor.

Side effects and precautions

Common side effects

The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, reduced appetite and abdominal discomfort. These are usually mild to moderate and tend to ease within a few weeks as your body adjusts to the medicine or to a higher dose. Rare but important side effects include acute pancreatitis and gallbladder disease; low blood sugar can occur when Mounjaro is used together with other glucose-lowering medicines. If you develop unusual symptoms such as severe, persistent abdominal pain, stop using it and seek medical attention immediately.

Who should not use Mounjaro (contraindications)

  • Anyone who is pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
  • Anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to any ingredient of this medicine
  • Anyone with a history of pancreatitis or severe gastrointestinal disease (please tell the doctor at your consultation)

Important note about approved use

In Japan, Mounjaro is approved as a treatment for type 2 diabetes. Using it for weight management is off-label use and is provided as self-pay (non-insured) care, prescribed only after a doctor has assessed you in person or online. We dispense genuine brand-name medicine obtained through Japan’s regular pharmaceutical distribution channels.

FAQ

How should I store Mounjaro?

As a rule, keep it refrigerated at 2–8d℃. It can, however, be kept at room temperature below 30℃ for up to 21 days in total. If you carry it at room temperature while traveling, simply put it back in the fridge when you reach your destination or get home (The cumulative time out of the fridge must not exceed 21 days). That means a long flight is not a problem. If you would rather not worry about temperature, carry it in an insulated cooler bag — we keep them in stock for travelers and you can buy one from our staff.

Can I take it on the plane back to Singapore, the U.S., or elsewhere?

Rules differ by airline, but in general yes. A small quantity of medicine for your own use can normally be taken on board. Always pack it in your carry-on bag and never in checked luggage — the hold can get cold enough to freeze the medicine and ruin it. Injectable medicines, needles and medically necessary gel ice packs are allowed through airport security (in the U.S., the TSA requires you to declare them and present them separately for screening), so keep everything in its original packaging and tell the officer at the checkpoint.

Do I need to do anything at customs when I take it home?

Rules are set by the country you are entering, and they change, so please check with your own authorities before you travel. Wherever you are going, three things help: keep the medicine in its original packaging with the pharmacy label, carry a English medical certificate (we can issue one for JPY 3,000), and declare it if asked.

Singapore: the Health Sciences Authority allows travellers to bring in personal medication in the original, labelled packaging with a copy of a valid prescription or doctor’s letter, and quantities above a three-month supply are not allowed; medicines containing controlled substances need HSA approval applied for at least two weeks before arrival, so check the HSA personal-medication pages for your own situation.

United States: keep the original labels and your prescription, limit the quantity to what you personally need, and declare the medicine to a CBP officer on arrival. Please note that a prescription certificate is a supporting document, not a guarantee that you will be allowed to bring the medicine in — the decision always rests with the officer on duty.

Can I buy it tax-free?

Unfortunately, no. Under Japanese tax laws, medicines prescribed by a doctor at a medical institution (including self-pay/out-of-pocket treatments) are not eligible for tax-free exemption or refunds. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Can I order more or ask questions after I return home?

Yes. Even after you return home you can keep in touch with the doctor and request a further prescription through our official WhatsApp or LINE account. (*Repeat prescriptions can be delivered to an address in Japan, or collected at the clinic on your next trip — just book an appointment.)

Whether you have questions about how the medicine is working, concerns about side effects, or you simply want to plan your next supply, please message us on WhatsApp or LINE at any time.
